HyperOS 4: Xiaomi’s 5 Biggest Upgrades Bring a New Glass UI, Smarter AI and Faster Performance
HyperOS 4: Xiaomi’s 5 Biggest Upgrades Bring a New Glass UI, Smarter AI and Faster Performance

Xiaomi is giving its smartphone software a much bigger makeover with HyperOS 4 , and this time the changes go well beyond a new look. Based on Android 17 , the update combines a redesigned interface with deeper AI integration, system-level performance improvements and new ways for two Xiaomi phones to work together. Xiaomi officially launched the HyperOS 4 beta in August, while its global beta program has since started rolling out to selected devices. Among the many additions, five upgrades stand out because they could make the biggest difference in everyday use. 1. HyperOS 4 brings the Soft Light Glass design The most obvious change in HyperOS 4 is visual. Xiaomi has introduced a new Soft Light Glass design that uses translucent layers, lighting effects, blur and simulated light refraction to give the interface a more dimensional appearance. The design reaches areas such as the home screen, lock screen, folders, widgets and Control Centre. Xiaomi describes the approach as part of its new visual direction built around texture, light and shadow, and spatial depth. However, there is an important catch: not every compatible phone gets the complete visual treatment. The more demanding Soft Light Glass effects are dependent on hardware. Xiaomi has indicated that the full experience is initially aimed at newer flagship-class chipsets, including Snapdragon 8 Elite-or-newer, Dimensity 9500-or-newer and Xring O1-or-newer platforms. That means two phones running HyperOS 4 may not necessarily look exactly the same. 2. Super XiaoAi 2.0 makes AI far more useful AI is arguably the bigger story underneath the new interface. Super XiaoAi 2.0 is powered by Xiaomi’s MiMo large language model and is designed to move beyond simple voice commands. Xiaomi says the upgraded assistant can handle more complex tasks, including cross-app and cross-device actions. Its AI architecture is intended to understand a request and then actually carry out parts of the task. The Expert Mode takes this further by handling multi-step requests. Depending on the feature and region, Xiaomi has demonstrated capabilities such as Deep Research, webpage creation and content generation. HyperOS 4 also introduces the Inspiration Ball, which can analyse content on the screen and offer contextual actions. For example, selected information can be used for actions such as navigation or other relevant searches. Xiaomi is also adding AI features to its first-party apps. The Recorder app can recognise meeting scenarios and generate key points and summaries, while AI Voice Notes and the Super XiaoAi keyboard are designed to make recording and refining information easier. The important point is that AI is no longer being treated as a separate chatbot feature. Xiaomi is trying to make it part of the phone’s everyday workflow. 3. HyperOS 4 focuses heavily on performance A prettier interface means little if the phone becomes sluggish after hours of use. Xiaomi appears to be addressing that problem with changes under the hood. The company has upgraded its HyperCore architecture with more precise load calculation and an AI-assisted memory preloading system. The idea is simple: the software predicts what resources a user may need and prepares them in advance. According to Xiaomi's internal testing, HyperOS 4 can deliver: 27.2% more available memory after eight hours of use. Around 17.5% faster app launches after extended usage. A 14.4% reduction in total system instructions across tested high-frequency scenarios. Up to 90% faster photo-thumbnail scanning in the Gallery under Xiaomi's test conditions. Around 200ms faster camera cold-start time. HDR photo processing reduced from 310ms to 240ms. These numbers come from Xiaomi's own testing, so real-world results can vary by phone, workload and software version. Still, the direction is clear: HyperOS 4 is not just about making Xiaomi phones look different; the company is also rebuilding parts of the software experience to keep performance consistent over longer sessions. 4. The lock screen gets a major redesign The lock screen is another area where HyperOS 4 feels noticeably different. Users get more flexibility over clock layouts, including the ability to resize and reposition elements. Notifications are also arranged in a more streamlined, vertically stacked format instead of relying solely on separate cards. The system additionally uses spatial-depth effects to separate elements such as the subject, text, date and clock, creating a layered appearance. It is a relatively small change compared with the AI and performance upgrades, but it is one users will see every time they pick up their phone . 5. Dual-Phone Syncing could be surprisingly useful One of the more practical additions is Dual-Phone Syncing. The feature lets two supported Xiaomi phones signed into the same Xiaomi account share incoming calls and SMS verification codes. Xiaomi says users can receive calls and identify SMS verification codes across devices, with both phones connected to the internet. That is particularly useful for people who carry two phones and do not want to constantly switch devices when a call or OTP arrives on the other handset. There is another interesting aspect: the feature is not simply traditional Bluetooth mirroring. Xiaomi's current implementation works when both phones are connected to the internet, allowing cross-device communication even when they are not relying on the same local network. Availability and supported models can vary by region and software version. For now, some of the more advanced HyperOS 4 features remain tied to specific devices or regions, particularly features associated with Xiaomi's China software ecosystem. HyperOS 4 is more than a cosmetic update The biggest takeaway from HyperOS 4 is that Xiaomi is attacking the smartphone experience from several directions at once. Soft Light Glass changes the way the interface looks, Super XiaoAi 2.0 pushes AI deeper into everyday tasks, HyperCore targets long-term performance, the redesigned lock screen adds more personalisation, and Dual-Phone Syncing expands Xiaomi's ecosystem features. The update is currently moving through beta testing rather than being a universal stable release. Xiaomi's global beta program has already begun for selected devices, while availability of individual features can differ based on the model, region and language. So, while HyperOS 4 may initially grab attention because of its glass-like interface, the more meaningful change could be what happens underneath it: Xiaomi is trying to make its software more intelligent, more connected and more capable of handling tasks for the user.

Pope calls worshippers saints of France after AI warning
Pope calls worshippers 'saints of France' after AI warning

PARIS, France — Thousands of worshippers cheered Pope Leo XIV on Friday as he stepped up to pray and called those gathered at a stadium near Paris the "saints of France", after urging world peace and warning against an AI-driven "paradise of machines". "The Church of France needs you," he told the worshippers, who were aged between 17 and 35. "Thank you for your courage, thank you for your presence, thank you for your faith." "You are the saints of France," he added, after golden fireworks exploded above the Stade de France following a reenactment of the country's Christian history. Only around five percent of France's 69 million residents go to Catholic church services regularly, a survey found last year. But while the number of infants getting baptised has dwindled in recent years, more teenagers and adults are taking the plunge. Earlier in the afternoon, the pope crossed central Paris in his popemobile on the first official papal visit to the European nation in 18 years. Some balconies and pavements were decked out in the Vatican's yellow-and-white colours. "He's here!" one person cried as the popemobile passed by, under a clear blue sky. "Look, it's the pope, this is crazy," said another. 'Feel it in my heart' The Vatican estimated around 300,000 people had come out to see the pontiff. Terry Spytek, 83, travelled all the way from the United States to see the pope for just three seconds — but she said it was worth it. "I feel it right here, in my heart," she told AFP. "I feel very touched even if it was a very quick glance." People rushed forward to kiss the hand of the first US pontiff before he entered Notre Dame Cathedral, which only reopened in 2024 following a fire in 2019. One million people are expected at events across Paris during the first two days of his trip, as he marks the first official trip by a head of the Vatican since Pope Benedict XVI in September 2008. Leo's predecessor Francis visited France three times, but never officially. The high point of the apostolic journey will be a Mass on Saturday led by the pontiff at Place de la Concorde and adjoining Champs-Elysees. The leader of the world's 1.4 billion Catholics will also visit the pilgrimage site of Lourdes, where he will privately meet victims of sex abuse by clergy, and Metz near the German border, where he is to speak about peace in Europe. 'Authentic secularity' The much-awaited parade came after Pope Leo spoke at the presidential palace on the need to safeguard humanity against artificial intelligence. "If we are to avoid losing our humanity amid a paradise of machines invading and conditioning our daily lives, there is an urgent need for education in ethical discernment," he said beside President Emmanuel Macron. In a time of tense transatlantic ties and as Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine drags on in its fifth year, Pope Leo urged France to remain a "tireless champion of peace". In a proudly secular country that has for more than a century separated church and state, Pope Leo stressed that "authentic secularity" should not exclude religion "from the public sphere or from education". Politicians have in recent years often invoked France's brand of secularism to justify bans on religious symbols, including Muslim women's attire, in public spaces and schools. After France passed legislation in June granting some adult patients the right to assisted dying, the pontiff warned against turning science "into profit-driven ventures promoting genetic manipulation, surrogacy, the trade in human organs or the possibility of arranging one's own death".
